The Karkonosze Museum in Jilemnice includes a Neo-Renaissance palace, a baroque building (comprising the manor brewery and the official’s house), as well as the gardener’s house. Visitors are welcome to a rich historical and ethnographic exhibition devoted to the local crafts.

For many centuries, Jilemnice was the most important craft centre in the western Karkonosze. The linen industry was well developed as early as the 16th century. The peak of its prosperity falls at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. Local merchandise used to successfully compete with the best products on distant European markets. The great tradition of the textile industry is illustrated by examples of weaving merchandise, pattern books, examples of hand-made shuttles, hand-looms and tools for linen processing.

The broad range of local craftsmanship, in addition to numerous examples of woodcarving, locksmith, carpentry and wax work, is evidenced by a rare collection of guild items – chests, jugs, banners, guild pictures and others. The most important place in this collection is occupied by a set of 33 guild coffin shields supplemented with funeral guild torches. These beautiful exhibits from the first half of 19th century, made by craftsmen from velvet and partly gilded silver plate, are the largest collection of their kind in the Czech Republic.

Particular attention in the museum exhibitions is devoted to glass production in North Bohemia, with an emphasis on the glassworks in Nový Svět in today’s Harrachov, and to the beginnings of ski production in the area.
