Since 1997, the Heritage House in Kowary has been the seat of the Association of Kowary Enthusiasts (SMK – Stowarzyszenie Miłośników Kowar), established four years earlier. The building facade bears depictions of disappearing professions, such as blacksmith, miner, weaver, brewer and herbalist.
SMK aims to manage cultural heritage projects, promote a variety of local crafts and industries, notably mining, which for centuries has been a crucial part of the Kowary brand. In the Heritage House, the association has set up a little regional museum.
The ground floor features a permanent exhibition devoted to local brewing traditions (beer was still brewed in Kowary as long as the beginning of the 20th century). On the first floor, in the hall, you can see an exhibition of carpets (the collection includes, among others, beautiful Smyrna carpets and axminters), and just next to it – the “Kowary mining” room, dedicated to local traditions related to iron ore mines. An important date in the history of Kowary was 1927, when uranium ore mining began here. After 1945, the exploitation of these deposits was resumed, but it was strictly confidential, as uranium was used in nuclear research. For the first dozen or so years, all the output was sent to the Soviet Union, which is confirmed by a secret Soviet geological map from 1953. The first floor of the attic is also part of the collection, with the bedroom and bathroom arranged in a style referring to the first half of the 20th century. Among the exhibits, you will find an original bed, wedding endowments, embroidered bedding, shaving brushes, razor blades and perfumes from the era. There are also many interesting blacksmith art products including locks, decorative door handles and hand-forged nails. Visitors can also see porcelain electric fuses and industrial lamp casings made at the Technical Porcelain Factory.
